It looks like your family name's spelling was changed is some manner. Can't you remember original spelling?
Hexel doesn't look like Ukrainian or Slavonic name.. Or may be it's just not widely used.

My understanding is that it was a German/Austrain name and changed from Hexel to Hecksel during Eliis Island processing.
